Centered on a concert at the Fondation Singer-Polignac, Ensemble Écoute celebrates ten years of creation with its first monographic album devoted to the music of Alex Nante. Launching a new b·records collection, this album traces, between lyricism and spirituality, the evolution of a distinctive musical language shaped by the longstanding collaboration between the composer and the ensemble, through several chamber music settings reflecting the diversity and richness of his writing.

A sequel to Alexandre Tharaud’s 2020 album of contemporary piano concertos, this release presents three recent, kaleidoscopic concertos, all composed specially for the multi-faceted French musician: Cara Bali Concerto by Thierry Pécou (born in France in 1965), Mare Marginis (nouvelle lune) by Ramon Lazkano (born in Spain in 1968) and Luz de lejos by Alex Nante (born in Argentina in 1992). Tharaud is joined by three different orchestras and three different conductors: for the Pécou by the Orchestre national de Lyon and Jonathan Stockhammer; for the Lazkano by the WDR Sinfonieorchester and Sylvain Cambreling, and for the Nante by the Orchestre national de Lille and Emilia Hoving. “I don’t like museums, Tharaud has said, “I like works to be alive … That’s also our role, to push boundaries, to shake things up a bit.”

“All one has to do is hit the right notes at the right times, and the instrument plays itself.” This might well be a note scribbled inside a portfolio of a student’s lessons with Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach’s responsibilities as a teacher inspired him to create a myriad of pieces for the benefit of his students, both in and outside his family. This new album is based on an imagined folio of these lessons, highlighting various facets of music-making and learning: from copying, arranging, accompanying and ornamenting, to explorations of style and technique. Apart from furthering his students’ abilities, posterity was very much on Bach’s mind. He hoped that his pupils would go on to influence “the minds of other good students who are not satisfied with the ordinary lirum-larum.”

The Ensemble Rayuela was established at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris, following the friendly meeting of four saxophonists and a pianist. Originating from different countries (Spain, Japan and Italy), the members of the ensemble feed their musical project with a rich cultural mixture which they sometimes share with other instrumentalists; meetings conducive to the exploration of new musical styles. The ensemble studied for two years with David Walter and obtained the master’s degree in chamber music with the mention «A grade unanimously with the congratulations of the jury» at the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance of Paris. The Ensemble Rayuela performed at the «Philharmonie de Paris» as part of the cycle «Prelude to concerts», at the Festival «Automne musical grand Châtellerault», at the «Festival Eurupéen Jeunes Talents» at the Hôtel of Soubise and at the Petit Palais, for the «Musical Season at the Invalides» in the Grand Salon of the Army Museum. The present release by The Ensemble Rayuela features Moussorgsky’s Tableaux d’une exposition, Alex Nante’s Altro castello, and Benoit Sitzia’s Rayuela.

As Theseus unrolled the thread given by Ariadne to find his way through the labyrinth, Marianne Piketty tries to find her way through the labyrinth of time by inventing a path from Baroque to present. She thus gives shape and life to Ariadne by crossing the voices of Pietro Locatelli and Alex Nante. The myth has indeed inspired and continues to inspire artists. Violinist and composer Locatelli, as prodigious as Vivaldi, set to music the abandonment of Ariadne. ‘Il pianto d’Arianna’ expresses the pain and the freedom at the same time in a virtuoso way, reflective of the power of imagination. Marianne Piketty is an audacious music-broker: she gives substance to this time journey by reinventing the relevant form of the concert, be it live or recorded.
